Asthma

Asthma characterized by short, rapid and wheezing repiration, or labored breathing aggravated by exertion or even with rest.
Wheezing and Asthma is often due to weakness of lung, spleen or kidney qi, and certain formulas contain qi tonifying herbs. Tonifying kidney qi supports the kidney function of "rooting the lung" which facilitates a strong descent of the diaphragm, thereby maximizing air volume during the inhalation. Certain medicines are specific to this function such as Gecko (Ge Jie) and Ginkgo (Bai Guo). Other cases of asthma may be aggravated by exposure to pathogenic wind cold, and formulas that aid in dispelling wind and warming the lung are necessary.
In modern clinical practice, food allergies can contribute to wheezing and asthma, and significant benefit may be gained by eliminating dairy and gluten grains (wheat, rye, oats, barley). Other common allergen triggers include milds, fungus, animal hair, and dust mites. Supportive work with qi and wei tonic such as Astragalus (Huang Qi) can be helpful in building resistance to exogenous irriants.
